About 8.50am, emergency services responded to reports of a house fire at a rural property on Jerrawa Road, 3km from Dalton.
Harden and Dalton Rural Fire Service units attended, together with a Fire and Rescue NSW crew from Yass. The blaze was extinguished however, the house was destroyed.
Reports from Yass police said that initial firefighting efforts had been hindered by reports of loud bangs from inside the house, which may have been attributable to exploding ammunition.
Once the fire was out and fire crews could make an assessment, the body of an adult was found inside the remains of the house, which sits on a large wool-growing property.
The body is yet to be formally identified.
Officers from the Hume police district established a crime scene, which will be examined by specialist forensic officers.
A report will be prepared for the NSW Coroner.
