The warning comes after multiple cars were broken into, and in some cases stolen, from parts of Canberra's south, including Weston Creek, Woden and the Molonglo Valley.
"Vehicle break-ins are opportunistic crimes and there are a number of steps owners can take to limit the chances of their car being broken into," an ACT Policing spokesman said.
Drivers were advised to make sure their car was always locked and windows closed, as well as not to leave valuables such as phones and wallets inside.
"If you have a garage, use it rather than leave your car in the driveway or on the street," the spokesman said.
"If you have to leave it outside, if possible, park in a well-lit area."
Police earlier this month said stolen cars were being used in a string of ram-raids in Canberra businesses, with more than 19 taking place in the last month.
