Melbourne powerhouse Hume City defeated the Cooma Tigers 2-0 in front of 855 spectators at Deakin Stadium on Wednesday.
The Tigers have conceded just 14 goals in 15 rounds in the Canberra premier league, but it took Hume City just five minutes to mark the scoreboard.
Cooma played without star striker Nico Abot, who recently moved to Thailand to continue his football career.
But assistant coach Jair Wilk doesn't believe his absence made any difference.
"Obviously Nico is a very good striker and it's not easy to let your top-scorer go," Wilk said.
"But I think [Goran] Josifovski and [Mark] Shields did a good job upfront. We miss Nico but I don't think it was a big hassle to have him there."
Former A-League player James Brown outsmarted Cooma's defence with a backheel pass to Mark Ochieng, who bounced the ball past keeper Jakob Cole.
Matthew Lazarides rode on Hume City's momentum and danced the ball past Cooma's defensive line and attempted to flick the ball towards the front-of-the-box, but Cole dived on it before Hume City could complete the move.
Tigers nearly equalised the score in the 28th minute after Nahuel Guerrero copped Mitch Cooper's boot in the face and awarded Cooma a free-kick.
Darren Bailey perfectly shot the ball towards the box for Redmond to complete the move with a flick, but Hume City deflected it from the line to maintain their lead.
The visitors bounced back minutes later as Benjamin Bowler struck the ball from around 25 yards to extend their lead 2-nil going into half-time.
Hume City coach Nicolas Hegarty praised his fullbacks effort across the field.
"We had good performances from both our fullbacks with [Ochieng] coming out with a goal and an assist," Hegarty said.
"Bowler also put one in from a distance. We had a joke all season about him shooting from his left-foot, so it's good that he finally got one in after a lot of attempts."
Tigers came out firing in the second-half and had four major chances in the opening nine minutes.
But Hume City masterfully slowed down the game to take back control and hold onto their lead.
"We managed to control the tempo of the second-half," Hegarty said.
"It's something that we haven't been great at all season, having the courage to get big and still play, but the first ten minutes we didn't do that. We turned the ball over in bad areas and they had the chance to score.
"Cooma really put the pressure on and are good at what they do, which their league position shows. So we had to slow down the game and kill it, which we did very well."
Hume City nearly extended the margin in the 79th minute as Cooper ran the ball down the line, crossed it to George Howard, who smacked the ball over the crossbar.
Tigers will now set their sights on completing their dream run in the Canberra premier league.
Cooma sit comfortably on top-of-the-table with three rounds remaining before finals and will take on Canberra FC at Nijong Oval on Sunday.
"If we win the next two matches then we become champions so that's our main focus now," Wilk said.
"The next four games, including Hume, are finals for us and you can't get a better warm-up game than this, being on the national stage.
"We'll take the experience because they had five former A-League players.
"We're going to take it game by game and not get too ahead of ourselves because we play Canberra FC, Gungahlin United and then Canberra Olympic."
