The six-week undertaking will see former secretary of the NSW Department of Finance, Services and Innovation Martin Hoffman at the helm, while the firms provide advice and support.
The tender was awarded to McKinsey alone on July 11, for services required until August 23, but the Department of Human Services confirmed KPMG would share in its maximum $858,000 value.
The tender's contract notice went live on Aus Tender on Monday.
"McKinsey and KPMG have been engaged to provide strategic advice to the Services Australia Taskforce that has been established to develop the strategic plan for Services Australia," a spokesman for the Department of Human Services said.
"The engagement of these firms was through a Commonwealth Business Advisory Panel, which was established though an open approach to the market."
Services Australia, which is a rebadging of the Human Services department, has been touted as a one-stop shop for interacting with the federal government.
Government officials, including Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Minister for Government Services Stuart Robert, have signaled it would be modelled on Service NSW.
The service offers an online portal and shopfronts where people can book driving tests, renew vehicle registration, apply for births, deaths and marriage certificates, and seek Housing NSW tenancies among other services.
"[Martin Hoffman] brings a wealth of experience to the role, including an extensive understanding of Service NSW's customer-centric design, as well as a strong background in successful delivery of customer-focused services," Mr Robert said in June.
