The rockfall is expected to close the road completely until late on Friday, with a Corryong-based contractor using a large excavator to systematically clear away the rubble.
The site of the landslip had been previously affected by occasional rockfalls and light metal screening had been installed as a future preventative measure. However, the volume of rocks and soil in this landslip ripped apart the screening.
While the western approach on the Alpine Way is used for occasional access to the NSW snowfields, the more common approach is from the eastern side, via Jindabyne.
