Police carried out patrols on Tuesday and Wednesday at the intersection of Barry Drive and Northbourne Avenue, the same intersection where a pedestrian was hit by a tram on Monday.

The patrols coincided with Rail Safety Week this week.

ACT police said nine pedestrians were fined in just one hour on Tuesday for walking against the pedestrian lights.

More than double the number of fines were issued on Wednesday during patrols at the same intersections.

Patrols are expected to continue throughout the rest of the week.

A police spokesman said the patrols at the intersection were always planned to coincide with Rail Safety Week and were not brought on by the pedestrian being hit earlier this week.

Acting officer in charge of traffic, Stephen Booth, said pedestrian behaviour was concerning.

"Crossing the road against the lights is both irresponsible and dangerous," Mr Booth said.

"We are frustrated that people are not only ignoring the signals but they are doing it in front of a highly visible police presence."

Pedestrians stopped by police as part of the patrols were fined $151.

Similar patrols in the area took place earlier this year in March, prior to the launch of light rail.
