ACT Policing has released CCTV footage that shows sparks flying as the offenders use petrol-powered grinders and then a crow bar, in a failed attempt to access the cash box on payment machines on level two of the centre on August 2.

The footage also shows a maroon Mazda hatchback being driven into the shopping centre car park from Lathlain Street, Belconnen about 2.40am.

Police believe the three offenders - two of a slim build, one of a solid build, and all dressed in black - were disturbed by officers responding to a call from shopping centre security.

The offenders left the car park via the Lathlain Street exit about 2.45am.

Detective Acting Station Sergeant Stephen Ladd from ACT Policing Criminal Investigations said this kind of crime was brazen, but also largely futile.

"The cash boxes on these machines are emptied regularly, and many people pay for their parking using their card, so there usually isn't a large amount of cash in the machines," he said.

"These offenders had obviously planned this activity in advance, but police responded swiftly to the call from shopping centre security, and disturbed them before they could do any more damage."
