Australia butchered their best chance in a decade to break a 33-year hoodoo and put the Bledisloe Cup in an Australian trophy cabinet for the first time since 2002 with a dismal 36-0 loss at Eden Park on Saturday.

The All Blacks had the last laugh. Or they would have, had hot rage not fuelled their every carry, tackle, fend and clear-out as they bludgeoned Australia in an 80-minute rampage that finished one point shy of equalling the Wallabies' largest ever losing margin to New Zealand.

After a week of hand-wringing up and down the country, brought about by Australia's record 47-26 win in Perth, Kieran Read and his players proved the doubters wrong. Five tries to nil wrong.

To say the New Zealand forwards were fired up was an understatement. Ardie Savea carried like a man possessed, fury emanated from Read and Sam Whitelock had the militant abrasiveness to suit his new short-back-and-sides haircut.

Coach Steve Hansen's selection punts paid off, the Wallabies couldn't contain wingers Sevu Reece and George Bridge and Owen Franks's replacement Nepo Laulala will be forgiven for one embarrassing knock on in the first half in the context of his role in a dominant New Zealand scrum.

As quickly as Kurtley Beale's jersey unravelled with a single wrench from Beauden Barrett in the second half, the Wallabies' Bledisloe dreaming spiralled wildly out of control.

They couldn't handle the pressure New Zealand applied and the first thing to go was the accuracy they played with a week earlier.

Witness Reece Hodge's overrun, Beale's fumble, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto's knock-on and Christian Leali'ifano's two missed kicks for goal. Just to start.

By the end it was impossible to watch. The few gold beanies and scarves among the sell-out sea of black might have been yanked down over Australian eyes as the Wallabies were reduced to being picked off at will by their opponents.

Australia should have led 6-3 by the 22nd minute but Leali'ifano - easily the most accurate kicker in Australia this year - couldn't find his radar, missing two penalty goals.

Richie Mo'unga had put first points on the board with a penalty goal of his own in the fourth minute.

Australia's lineout started well, delivering clean ball to the back line for their first attacking opportunity of the night.

But a forward pass from Leali'ifano handed back possession to the All Blacks.

A well-chased kick ahead from the unlikeliest of characters, hooker Tolu Latu, allowed the Wallabies to assert some pressure again but Marika Koroibete was penalised for a high tackle.

Nic White was floored by a high tackle from Whitelock and referee Jaco Peyper awarded the penalty.

Whitelock, the big man of the All Blacks pack singled out for criticism by Hansen this week, was penalised again soon after for a tackle off the ball, allowing Australia its first opportunity to get on the board.

Yet Leali'ifano missed the shot from just inside the 10m line, the ball bouncing off the left post.

Australia disrupted the New Zealand lineout and launched an attacking raid off the back in the 19th minute, but some desperate defence from the home side and two offside penalties in close succession limited the visitors to a shot at goal.

As the crowd booed, Leali'ifano missed again.

The All Blacks attacked off their lineout but a knock on by tight head prop Laulala defused the threat. The Australian scrum won a penalty on their 22 and White cleared the ball.

Australia looked to be finding their groove in attack when a Hodge overrun and fumble handed Mo'unga his second Test try in the 29th minute. He put the All Blacks out to a 10-0 lead with the conversion.

It was 17-0 within minutes when winger Bridge ran through Hodge and Salakaia-Loto before giving it to halfback Aaron Smith to score.

The Wallabies looked in all sorts when the New Zealand pack mauled towards the Australian try line but they got out of jail in a big way when the TMO Marius Jonker spotted Dane Coles's "judo throw" dispatch of White off the ball.

Peyper was content with a penalty but Jonker intervened to put the incident on the big screen.

"I can confirm what I see is a hand around the neck and it's a judo throw," Jonker said to Peyper.

"So, yellow?" Peyper replied.

"Correct."

Beale's inexplicable fumble in the 39th minute added to the troubles, with Mo'unga missing a penalty attempt in the 42nd minute to end a dominant first half.

It was more of the same in the second, with Sonny Bill Williams scoring an early try as the home side reminded everyone of their quality just weeks out from the Rugby World Cup in Japan.
