England, suffering a serious case of post-World Cup blues, were bowled out for 67 in their first innings - their lowest total in the Ashes since 1948 - before Marnus Labuschagne again impersonated the absent Steve Smith by spending Friday afternoon building what shapes as a match-winning lead of 283 runs with four wickets in hand.

With Paine's men only needing to win one of the last three Tests to hold onto the Ashes for the first time in England since 2001, they are now in prime position to complete that task in Yorkshire despite their best batsman being sidelined with concussion here.

There were shades of Australia's capitulation for 60 at Trent Bridge - where the series was lost four years ago - as a sensational Hazlewood led Pat Cummins and James Pattinson in a demolition of Joe Root's team in 27.5 overs.

England's misery was compounded when Jofra Archer, four balls into a new spell, left the field awkwardly, clutching his hamstring with an hour's play left. An England team spokesman later said he had a cramp in his thigh and after receiving treatment he returned 40 minutes later but did not bowl. It came after questions about whether he was being overused, with fast bowling great Michael Holding labelling Archer's workload on debut at Lord's - where he bowled 44 overs - as "abuse".

The England captain's nightmare day also included a second-ball duck and an awful blunder at first slip after tea that could prove crucial in the wash-up. It occurred during a lively, marathon spell from Ben Stokes that threatened to provide a lifeline for England. Labuschagne was on 14 at the time and was even heard saying "good ball" as it careered off his edge towards Root, who had two grabs at it before it fell to the turf.

The dogged Labuschagne, who top scored for the third straight time since coming into the team last Sunday as a substitute for Smith, was also spared later by a Stokes no-ball when a bottom edge flew to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow. He was also dropped for a second time on 42 off Stokes, down low by Bairstow, and remains unbeaten on 53 alongside Pattinson (2 not out), with Australia to resume on Saturday at 6-171 in their second innings.

Hazlewood said it would be difficult for England to fight back from where they are when they bat again.

"We might be starting with a few scars there," Hazlewood said. "It's hard work to come back from [a total of 67] during a Test," he said. "I don't think many teams are winning if one of their innings is 60 or 70 runs, it makes it difficult. I think if we start well again next innings, they might think 'here we go again' so it's about creating that doubt in the mind. The way we've gone about it is not letting the foot off, just keep going."

Hazlewood, bowling an immaculate line and length, had earlier rocked the England top order for the second time in two matches and wound up with 5-30 while similarly impressive Cummins (3-23) and Pattinson (2-9) also got in on the action as the series was turned on its head in the space of two hours. The trio were bowling alongside each other for the first time in a Test match and it was some debut.

The rout was completed only 35 minutes after lunch and included four catches from a fired-up David Warner, who had spilled two at Lord's in the midst of one of the worst run scoring droughts of his career.

Australia had been bowled out for 179 on the first day and Paine could have been excused for opening the curtains in his hotel room with a real sense of trepidation on Friday morning. After Australia's batsmen had endured overhead conditions that were a bowling team's dream on Thursday, the contrasting sight of the sun beaming down in Yorkshire didn't appear to auger well for defending a modest first-innings total on a dry pitch.

If the weather favoured England, though, that gave too much credit to their flimsy batting order - and certainly not enough to Hazlewood, Cummins and Pattinson.

England No.4 Joe Denly was the only batsman to reach double figures as they were rolled for less than 90 for the third time this year and Australia claimed an unlikely 112-run first-innings advantage.

"I can't remember a day like this to be honest," Hazlewood said.

While Warner had a field day at first slip and his hit-and-miss 61 on Thursday looked more valuable by the minute, he was gone for a two-ball duck in his second try as Stuart Broad took care of him for the fourth time in the series, angling in again from around the wicket and seaming it into his pads.

Opening partner Marcus Harris played an ugly shot to left-arm orthodox Jack Leach's first ball of the match, which spun substantially and bowled him through the gate for 19.

The dismissal of Usman Khawaja for 23 was also unflattering, flashing at a wider ball from Chris Woakes and being caught by Jason Roy for 23.

At 3-52, an overall lead of 164, England were clinging to hope but suffered a big setback when Root put Labuschagne down.

The all-rounder did make a breakthrough soon after when he launched a yorker into the bottom of Travis Head's off stump to send the Australia No.5 on his way for 25.

The missed opportunities mounted, though, for England and the tireless Stokes, who without Archer bowled for almost the entire final session at an average of 140km/h. It was little wonder he slumped to the ground after collecting a second wicket when a short ball deflected off the glove of Matthew Wade (33) en route to Bairstow.

There was one more late wicket as Paine went for a second-ball duck, overturning an lbw dismissal against Broad but in the process being judged caught in the slips by Denly.

Only three teams have successfully chased more than 300 in the fourth innings to win at Headingley: Don Bradman's Australia (404), England against Australia in 2001 (315) and West Indies against England in 2017 (322).

Despite their dire position in the game, however, England maintain they still have a chance.

"The game is not over from this position," batting coach Graham Thorpe said. "If we can knock them over in the morning, I've seen Test cricket have some strange endings. There's been scores here chased down in the fourth innings of over 300 before."
