1. Pop of colour
Internationally acclaimed artist Johnny Romeo is making a return to Canberra this week with his latest exhibition ROCKA ROLLA, which offers audiences a brilliant insight into the evolution of Australia's leading Pop artist. It brings together an array of iconic Romeo paintings which toy with the idea of pop culture, nostalgia and collective memory, injecting life (and colour) into icons such as Freddie Mercury, Betty Boop and Alice in Wonderland. Friday, 6pm-8pm (opening night) and Saturday and Sunday from 10am-5pm. Exhibition continues until October 6. Aarwun Gallery. Free event.
2. Take back the NightFest
Experience the dark side of Floriade a little early this year, when Highroad team up with the country's largest celebration of spring for a NightFest pop-up event. Enjoy a Floriade-inspired coffee cocktail (or mocktail) made by former World Coffee in Good Spirits finalist, Danny Wilson, explore the pop-up flower stall, paint your own garden gnome to take home and listen to live music by DJ Sidney Brien. Friday, 5.30pm-9pm. Tickets are $27.46 from Eventbrite. Ticket price includes the cost of one cocktail, a garden gnome and paint.
3. Wunderbar
Embrace everything Oktoberfest without having to get on a plane. The Bavarian Woden will bring the same decorations, biers, food, entertainment and traditional music as you would expect to see in Bavaria. The restaurant will be importing four Oktoberfestbiers (the official Oktoberfest bier) which is only brewed once a year, especially for the event. Oktoberfest at the Bavarian runs until October 27 but Saturday's grand opening is expected to be a party. Plus people are more than welcome to don their dirndls and lederhosen for the night. Saturday and Sunday, 11am-11.30pm. Free event.
4. On stage
It's Not Creepy if They're Hot is the third play from playwright Rose Licence. Blending verbatim theatre, slam poetry and music, the production follows 12 friends who aren't great at being friends. It asks not what happens, by why did it and why isn't anyone talking about it? Friday and Saturday, 7.30pm. Kambri Drama Theatre. Tickets from $10 from nutsanu.wixsite.com. Content warning: the play contains sexual harassment and sexual assault, alcohol and drug abuse, depression and anxiety.
5. Get creative
Head to the Garden of Enchantment, right in the middle of Garama Place for a perfect start to spring - a kokedama moss ball workshop. The West Row Botanica team will take you through step by step to make these living planters which will bring some distinctive greenery to any room. Saturday, 1pm. Garama Place, near the giant chessboard. Tickets are $11.64 from Eventbrite.
