Joe Daniel Rose, 28, of Kambah was denied bail in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday after he was arrested following a police chase in Tuggeranong. He also allegedly tried to escape from the hospital.
Police allegations outlined in court said officers had been conducting patrols in Wanniassa on Saturday morning when they spotted Mr Rose riding a Honda CBR450F motorcycle.
The motorcycle was missing a rear number plate and, as police followed the bike, officers saw Mr Rose drive through a red light and through a pedestrian crossing, causing two elderly people to jump backwards to avoid being hit, they said.
The police followed Mr Rose as he sped up, allegedly exceeding the speed limit by about 30km/h.
When the officers switched on their emergency lights, Mr Rose allegedly tried to jump over a gutter at a cul de sac to escape, however the rear wheel hit the gutter and he was thrown from the bike.
Police said Mr Rose tried to run and he began flailing his arms, and tried punching the officers who tried to apprehend him. The officers had to use a stun gun to restrain Mr Rose.
The officers allegedly found a Fabrique Nationale semi automatic pistol and five hollow point cartridges in Mr Rose's possession.
Mr Rose was taken to Canberra Hospital for treatment after falling from the motorcycle.
While he was under guard in hospital by two uniformed officers, Mr Rose allegedly escaped his room through a rear door before he was apprehended by a wardsman. Mr Rose allegedly twisted out of the grip of the wardsman and a police officer, and again escaped custody.
Another wardsman, responding to the "Code Black" announcement, had run to the area where Mr Rose's room was. When he arrived Mr Rose allegedly ran at the wardsman and hit him with his shoulder, causing him to fall to the ground.
The wardsman's nose began to bleed immediately. The court heard that during this incident, Mr Rose broke one person's nose and one person's femur.
He is expected to have further charges brought against him over these injuries.
Mr Rose was eventually taken back into custody and taken to the watch house.
The court heard Mr Rose was on bail for driving matters at the time, as well as being on parole in NSW, and that he had an open warrant in the Northern Territory.
Magistrate James Stewart denied Mr Rose's application for bail saying the risks he would not appear in court, and commit further offences were too great.
He said the allegations against Mr Rose were very serious and there was a strong prosecution case.
Mr Rose will appear in court again later this month.
