Matthew Donald Tilley was arrested last week after a DNA breakthrough linked him to the killing of Suzanne Poll in 1993.
He appeared in Ballarat Magistrates Court on Monday where his return to SA was approved.
Ms Poll, a mother-of-two, was stabbed to death while working at the Salisbury Sands & McDougall store during what police believe might have been a robbery-gone-wrong.
The lights were off and the shop was shut, but the front door remained ajar while the 36-year-old counted the day's takings.
A man entered the store and attacked Ms Poll, who tried to escape through a back room but was stabbed to death in a what police said was a vicious and sustained attack.
Her killer was cut during the attack, leaving a "considerable amount" of DNA that allowed for a match in the most recent checks.
As Tilley was returned to Adelaide on Monday, Ms Poll's daughter Melissa thanked detectives for working "tirelessly" over the past 26 years.
"I also want to thank members of the public for all the loving messages to myself and family," she said in a statement.
"Please know that we are still in great shock and experiencing the grief and pain as if it happened all over again."
Tilley was expected to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday on a murder charge.
