It was his encouraging that got Raiders star John Bateman into rugby league and the pair bashing into each other on the field outside their Bradford house helped make him the star he is.
It's also the reason why it's not just Canberra and Sydney that are turning green, but Bradford as well. Probably Hull too. But that's because of Josh Hodgson.
The whole north of England is going barmy for the Green Machine.
Kyle is John's older brother, who made a mad dash halfway around the world to ensure he'll be at Sydney Olympic Park for the NRL grand final.
Both he and his grandmother Patricia will be in the stands when John and the Raiders run out to face the Sydney Roosters on Sunday.
Hopefully, they'll be celebrating in the sheds afterwards.
But none of it would've happened if it wasn't for Kyle helping get a young John Bateman into rugby league.
"Yeah, he had no interest in the game until he came and watched and kind of got pushed into it a little bit by us," Kyle told The Canberra Times.
Once that seed was sown, then it was the start of a rugby league journey that's taken him to the other side of the world.
But that journey started on a little field near the family home in Bradford. The two Bateman boys ripping into each other in every spare moment.
From there the skilful second-rower was born. Not to mention the hard-as-nails England international. Or the cheeky 26-year-old who won plenty of fans' hearts with his pump fakes at opponent's heads.
Or, last but not least, the sheer will to win that's got him playing in his fifth grand final in just six years.
"We were different ages, but in our spare time that's all we did was play rugby and bash each other about on the little field outside the house," Kyle recalled.
"That's how he got into it really."
And all of Canberra's glad he did.
It's a love of the game that's flowed through the whole family, not just the two Bateman boys, but Patricia as well.
"[She's a] massive rugby league fan. She's been following it most of her life. It's big in the family, everybody follows it," Kyle said.
It hasn't all been plain sailing though. A mad scramble followed by flight delays made for a hectic trip Down Under.
It meant Kyle almost missed seeing Bateman win his Dally M second-rower of the year award on Wednesday night - getting to Sydney's Hordern Pavilion when the main course was served.
Bateman's one of four Englishmen in the Raiders squad, with Elliott Whitehead also hailing from Bradford.
Hodgson's from Hull, while Ryan Sutton - who's on the extended bench - is from Billinge, near St Helens.
Hodgson's also got plenty of family in Sydney for the big game.
But it means there'll be plenty of support for the Green Machine across the north of England as well.
The rest of Bateman's family, including daughter Millie, will be tuning in to watch the game.
"There'll all be up Sunday morning - I think it's 10.30am when it's supposed to be on - everybody will be up and ready for the final," Kyle said.
"Excited, nervous, extremely proud of him. It's always been a dream to come over and play here.
"For him to do this in his first year and perform how he's performed and for the team to play how they've played, it's just a crazy feeling.
"I didn't expect him to get where they are, but they've just carried on performing and just gone about their business unnoticed really.
"Hopefully they get the win on Sunday."
Having already enjoyed a couple of beers at the Sydney Opera House, what will he do if the Raiders do get up?
"Hopefully have a few on Sunday after the game with him," he said.
