Papalii has been picked in the Kangaroos squad for games against New Zealand and Tonga on October 25 and November 1 respectively.
The three-time Mal Meninga Medal winner hasn't played for Australia since 2016 after switching to Samoa for the World Cup two yeas ago.
Australian coach Meninga had no hesitation picking the powerful forward after one of the best seasons of his career, but a grand final injury could scupper plans for a return.
Papalii revealed he played most of the grand final with an injured pectoral muscle and the full extent of the damage is yet to be determined.
Raiders players have been given the early part of this week to reflect on the season that was, but medical appointments have been booked for the coming days.
Papalii was the Raiders' best player this year and played so well he was considered the best front-rower in the NRL.

"I think it is [the most shattered] I've been," Papalii said after the grand final. "I'm lost for words. It was there for the taking, we just didn't take it.
"I tried to do everything I could to help the club try to get a premiership, it just wasn't meant to be.
"We'll have get back to pre-season training, work hard and hopefully we end up here again."
Asked about his pectoral injury, Papalii said: "It's something new. We'll have to get a scan and see how it is."
Papalii, Clive Churchill Medal winner Jack Wighton and Nick Cotric were picked in the Australian squad, while Emre Guler and Corey Horsburgh were picked in the junior Kangaroos.
