The Brumbies and Raiders will start their respective 2020 preparations in the coming weeks when players and coaches being pre-season training this month.
McKellar and cross-code ally Ricky Stuart have spent their off-seasons picking the brains of coaches from rival sports.
McKellar visited Craig Bellamy at the Melbourne Storm and spent a week in the Brisbane Broncos inner sanctum, while Stuart was part of England's rugby World Cup quarter-final preparation.
So it's fitting McKellar and Stuart will join forces in an attempt to take down two New Zealand teams in a first for Super Rugby and the NRL next year.
The Brumbies and Raiders will play the Auckland Blues and New Zealand Warriors respectively after officials agreed to share Eden Park for a one-off event.
McKellar, who has just returned from a stint in Japan, was excited by the idea and urged fans to jump on board.
"I think it's a great concept. No doubt there's a few things logistically they'll still be working out, but the concept is outstanding," McKellar said.
"It's exciting if you're a Brumbies and Raiders supporter, or if you love one or the other. To get to Eden Park, one of the best rugby venues in the world ... it's a great opportunity for people to get on board.

"I think the players will love it and we can look forward to it for next year. It's going to be an event that will create real positivity around rugby league and rugby union.
"I certainly don't think of the Brumbies and Raiders as competitors ... we support each other and want each other to do well. This is another example of that."
The Brumbies and Raiders will share Canberra Stadium on the same weekend twice next year, as well as making the trip to Auckland together.
The Raiders will start their season with a match against the Gold Coast Titans at home on March 13, with the Brumbies to play at the same venue two days later against the NSW Waratahs.
They will also both use Canberra Stadium for match against Manly and the Wellington Hurricanes on April 3 and 4.
But before they join forces, they will compete for the right to win Canberra's prize for the best team of 2019.
The Brumbies, Raiders and Canberra Capitals have been nominated as finalists for the Canberra team of the year award, which will be announced at a function at the National Arboretum on November 29.
The Brumbies returned to the finals this year, the Raiders made the grand final for the first time since 1994 and the Capitals won their first championship in almost a decade.
"It's a fair field. Canberra sporting teams have been outstanding this year. The Capitals were really successful and the Raiders were unfortunate to fall at the last hurdle," McKellar said.
"I think it says a lot about the Canberra sporting community and how the city works for professional athletes."
