Adelaide United
Last season: 6th
Key gains: Mary Fowler (Bankstown City), Ciara Fowler (Bankstown City), Mallory Weber (Utah Royals).
Losses/yet to re-sign: Fanndis Fridriksdottir, Gunnhildur Jnsdttir, Emma Checker, Veronica Latsko.
Overview: Having lost Veronica Latsko to Sydney FC - she scored more than half of Adelaide's goals last season - United will likely be up against it in this campaign. Emma Checker also leaves a defensive hole, but there should be plenty of buzz around the arrival of 16-year-old Matildas prodigy Mary Fowler and her 18-year-old sister Ciara.
Brisbane Roar
Last season: 2nd (lost semi-final)
Key gains: Rylee Baisden (Moreton Bay United), Claire Farrington (Logan Lightning), Elise Kellond-Knight (Melbourne City), Tameka Yallop (Melbourne City)
Losses/yet to re-sign: Yuki Nagasato
Overview: The band is back together. Matildas trio Katrina Gorry, Claire Polkinghorne and Tameka Yallop. Any team with those three names will be tough to beat. Hayley Raso is another Matildas star who is dangerous.
Canberra United
Last season: 8th
Key gains: Simone Charley (Portland Thorns), Katie Stengel (Utah Royals), Leena Khamis (Western Sydney Wanderers), Jessie Rasschaert (Belconnen), Elise Thorsnes (LSK Kvinner)
Losses/yet to re-sign: Rachel Corsie, Ellie Carpenter, Maria Jose Rojas, Denise O'Sullivan
Overview: The concern for Canberra might be the gap between their best and worst players, although heading into the week of the season they still have plenty of spots on their roster to fill. Ellie Carpenter is a huge loss as a wing back. Karly Roestbakken remains after a whirlwind introduction to World Cup soccer earlier this year.
Melbourne City
Last season: 5th
Key gains: Emma Checker (Adelaide United), Claire Emslie (Orlando Pride), Ellie Carpenter (Canberra United), Emily Van Egmond (Newcastle Jets)
Losses/yet to re-sign: Tameka Butt, Elise Kellond-Knight, Jasmyne Spencer
Overview: Emma Checker is a great defensive signing, while Emily Van Egmond will buttress the centre of the park. Ellie Carpenter is one of the world's best wing backs while the Scottish international Claire Emslie will provide attacking class. Two consecutive seasons missing finals will not be acceptable City, so the pressure is on.
Melbourne Victory
Last season: 1st (lost in semi-final)
Key gains: Darian Jenkins (Reign FC), Jenna McCormick (AFLW), Hayley Hanson (Houston Dash), Rosie Sutton (unattached), Annalie Longo (Canterbury United Pride), Emily Menges (Portland Thorns)
Losses/yet to re-sign: Emily Gielnik, Christine Nairn, Dani Weatherholt, Laura Alleway, Annabel Martin
Overview: The loss of American pair Dani Weatherholt and Christine Nairn is significant, but with Natasha Dowie still around and signings Jenna McCormick, Darian Jenkins and Hayley Hanson, there should be every expectation they will be in the top few finishers.
Newcastle Jets
Last season: 7th
Key gains: Nicki Flannery (Canberra United), Annabel Martin (Melbourne Victory), Lauren Allan (New Lambton)
Losses/yet to re-sign: Emily Van Egmond, Taylor Smith, Katie Stengel
Overview: Emily Van Egmond is a massive loss, but the return of Hannah Brewer gives the side a re-injection of experience. The Jets announced earlier in the pre-season they weren't targeting star signings.
Perth Glory
Last season: 4th (lost in grand final)
Losses/yet to re-sign: Sam Kerr, Rachel Hill, Nikki Stanton
Overview: While the W-League is going to be a poorer place for not having Sam Kerr, spare a thought for her actual team. Kerr single-handedly won games for the Glory and will be irreplaceable. There's been little transfer movement out of the Glory.
Sydney FC
Last season: 3rd (won grand final)
Key gains: Veronica Latsko (Adelaide United)
Losses/yet to re-sign: Lisa De Vanna, Amy Harrison, Savannah McCaskill, Danielle Colaprico
Western Sydney Wanderers
Last season: 9th
Key gains: Kristen Hamilton (North Carolina Courage), Denise O'Sullivan (North Carolina Courage) and Lynn Williams (North Carolina Courage), Sam Staab (Washington Spirit)
Losses/yet to re-sign: Elizabeth Addo, Maruschka Waldus, Lo'eau La Bonta, Sydney Miramontez
Overview: The Wanderers are hoping to go from the cellar to the penthouse. They signed three NWSL winners: Kristen Hamilton, Denise O'Sullivan and Lynn Williams. Coach Dean Heffernan has no excuses going into this season.
