Samu and Powell have been picked in Jones' Barbarians squad for a three-match tour of England, Brazil and Wales.
Jones led England to the World Cup final two weeks ago and emerged as an attractive option to return to Australia to replace Michael Cheika as the Wallabies coach.
Jones has a contract to coach England until the end of 2021, but Rugby Australia boss Raelene Castle has made contact with the former Brumbies and Wallabies mentor to gauge his interest.
Jones reportedly said he was committed to England, but Samu, Powell and four Melbourne Rebels can plant a seed for a potential return.
The Barbarians will play against Fiji at Twickenham this weekend before a match against Brazil in Sao Paolo and then finishing with a clash against Wales at Cardiff.
Samu signed a new deal with the Brumbies last week, committing to a two-year contract extension for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Cheika left both Samu and Powell out of the Wallabies' World Cup squad.
Samu's omission came as a shock given he was one of the form back-rowers at the end of the Super Rugby season, and after Cheika lured him back to Australia following a stint with the Canterbury Crusaders.
Powell was cut as part of the scrumhalf rotation, with the Wallabies opting for just two specialist No. 9s in their squad.

Samu and Powell's Barbarians' duties will mean they miss the start of Brumbies' pre-season training when the bulk of the squad returns to Canberra next week.
Wallabies stars will be given an extended break and join their Brumbies teammates in January, giving coach Dan McKellar just a handful of weeks to prepare for the start of the season on January 31.
Samu and Powell will be joined by Rebels Angus Cottrell, Billy Meakes, Luke Jones and Matt Philip in the Barbarians team.
Ten South Africans are included - World Cup final heroes Tendai Mtawarira, Lukhanyo Am and Makazole Mapimpi plus Curwin Bosch, Herschel Jantjies, Dillyn Leyds, Andre Esterhuizen, Morne Steyn, Hencus van Wyk and Marco van Staden.
Retiring Ireland legend Rory Best, Scotland's Josh Strauss, French centre Mathieu Bastareud, Canada's Tyler Ardron, Fiji prop Campese Ma'afu and New Zealand duo David Havili and Andrew Makalio have also been called up.
The Barbarians will face Fiji at Twickenham on Saturday before travelling to Sao Paolo to take on Brazil four days later.
The trip to Brazil to take on the Tupis will mark the 24th country that the Barbarians have played, with their opponents since the turn of the century also including Germany, Portugal, Georgia, Tunisia, Spain, Belgium, Fiji, Samoa, the Czech Republic and Tonga.
