Taking to Instagram on Thursday, Mr Barr shared photographs of his happy day, on Wednesday, the beaming couple wearing natty blue plaid jackets and red roses in their lapel.
"Anthony and I married yesterday on our 20th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of our ACT civil partnership," the Chief Minister wrote.
"It was a small family ceremony in Anthony's home town of Newcastle.
"We had a lovely day and want to thank the 7.8 million Australians (and especially the 175,000 Canberrans) who voted yes to marriage equality."
Judging from the photographs, the couple's ceremony was at the historic Longworth House wedding venue in central Newcastle. The couple also posed for photographs at the former Newcastle railway station in the Honeysuckle precinct.
Wednesday marked the 20th anniversary of the couple's first meeting, at Canberra's first SpringOut gay and lesbian festival, which was also then Mr Toms' first visit to Canberra.
In 2009, they celebrated their civil partnership with a ceremony at the National Library.
Mr Toms and Mr Barr might have missed having a wedding during Canberra's short-lived same-sex marriage laws in 2013, which allowed weddings from December 7 to December 12 of that year, until they were struck down by the High Court. Since national marriage equality laws were passed and same-sex marriages made legal since December, 2017, they were free to celebrate their own memorable wedding day with family and friends.
The couple was getting a lot of love in reaction to their posts on social media on Thursday. Along with offering her congratulations, one person thanked Mr Barr and Mr Tom for "being such great role models".
"The most stylish couple in Canberra!", "Big moment for you guys personally but also for true equality. Go Canberra!" and "about time" were other comments. "So glad my vote counted so two humans who love each other could be married," another well-wisher wrote on Facebook.
The couple is now on their honeymoon.
