World Cup-winning former Wallabies No.8 Toutai Kefu is also on the radar of top officials within Rugby Australia, as is Rebels attack coach Shaun Berne, who worked with the Wallabies on a short-term contract this year.

Rennie said he wanted the Wallabies to play a "high-skill, high-speed" brand of rugby and his first priority was recruiting a team of Australians to help him build that. He will not link up with the team until July next year, when the Wallabies host Ireland for two Tests and Fiji for one Test.

"I think first thing is to establish a high-quality management and coaching group. We're into that now and I think it's important that we have a really strong, Australian flavour in that group," Rennie said.

"I want to bring back guys who are experienced and can offer a lot, are prepared to challenge. Those guys are going to be on the grass doing a lot of work while I'm still over this way."

Taylor, currently defence coach with Scotland, could be the first name signed by Rennie and director of rugby Scott Johnson. Talent management sources told the Herald that Scotland coach Gregor Townsend is on the lookout for a new defence coach, indicating Taylor will move on.

Wisemantel is England's attack coach under Eddie Jones but is actually employed by World Rugby as a consultant. The former NSW assistant could prove too expensive for the Wallabies and also a challenge to coax out of a role that allows him to dip in and out of coaching environments.

"There'll be a couple of sleepless nights and a lot of phone calls over the next couple of weeks," Johnson said.

"We've got the man at the top, it's (about) putting people around him that fit his skill set and also his personality so it complements.

"That's a perfect coaching team, where you get different personalities that can add to the environment. We're looking at that.

"I've been around the game a bit so I know the people that are out there. If we can bring people back, that's good too because that adds experience to our coaching team and we'll be doing everything in our power to make sure we get what we think is a quality coaching team.

"Our country deserves it, our team deserves it and we want it."
