BentSpoke Brewing Co has teamed up with Canberran entrepreneurs to brew an innovative new beer with local yeast captured from Canberra air, pear juice that claims to aid in preventing hangovers, crickets and dried black soldier fly larvae.

Brewed for the 2019 Innovation Showcase, "The Innovator" aims to highlight innovation and test the possibilities of brewing using local and environmentally friendly ingredients.

BentSpoke co-owner and head brewer Richard Watkins said this was a first for him. Is there anything he wouldn't put in a beer?

"If you'd asked me a month or so ago I would have yes, there are things I wouldn't have put in a beer, but after doing this beer I don't think there's anything I wouldn't at least try."

The beer was a collaborative project involving the ANU Research School of Biology which harvested yeast from the Canberra air; FutureSuper Foods who provided the cricket powder; Goterra who provided the dried black soldier fly larvae; and Prepear Drink Company that uses the juice of the nashi pear to reduce the toxin acetaldehyde in the body, which allegedly provides hangover relief.

Chief executive officer of the Canberra Innovation Network Petr Adamek approached Bentspoke to see if they would host the 2019 showcase in December.

Watkins was keen to collaborate with the network from the start.

"When they started talking about their starts up I had all these ideas," he said. "Brewing is all about the love of exploration and innovation, if you don't try something you'll never know, it seemed a perfect fit."

The Canberra Innovation Network connects innovation and entrepreneurship with science and research. More than 10,000 visitors engage with the network every year through events, programs and innovation focused educational courses the network supports and runs.

"The network links science and research with businesses and entrepreneurs to enable growth," Adamek said. "At this year's Innovation Showcase the attendees will be able to 'taste' what we are all about."
