The increase from 35 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour was set to apply to: Kings Avenue from Rowen Place to Parkes Way, the dual carriageway of Parkes Way, Morshead Drive to Plant Road in Duntroon, and Commonwealth Avenue from London Circuit to Kaye Street.
The new speed would not apply to Northbourne Avenue because of the many intersections along its length, a story on the front page of The Canberra Times said.
"A spokesman for the Department of the Interior said yesterday signs would be erected to indicate the beginning and end of the 40 miles per hour zones," the story said.
"The change had been decided on because the committee considered there was only limited access to the roads involved and little or no roadside development."
While police were anxious to discourage motorists from speeding, they were also trying to encourage freer flowing traffic, the story said.
