Could you imagine the election night chaos if we had two Queenslands to deal with? On this day in 1968, the deputy premier of the Sunshine State was declaring that pretty soon there would be a new northern state with Townsville as its capital.
"In the north there are not only tremendous opportunities and tremendous changes taking place but this area will, as time goes on, be the capital of a new and undoubtedly progressive state", he said.
We imagine that's progressive in other ways than we perhaps know it.
Mr Chalk said he was ready to plough more than $100 million in new facilities for the north, helping give it the infrastructure for the population growth required for Queensland 2.0.
While this dream obviously was never realised, it does make you wonder what would've happened to State of Origin.
