Jenni Heckendorf is flying back to town for the launch of her memoir 'Through the Years' at 5.30pm at Harry Hartog Booksellers, Australian National University on December 3, which is the International Day of People with Disability.

Though she left us last year for sunny Queensland, Jenni will always be in the Canberra community's heart.

Jenni spent 18 years here with her husband, David, and much of her memoir is set in Canberra.

It is a story of a rich family life, of growing up in the 60s and coming of age in the 70s, of being educated and living and working in the Spastic Centre in Sydney.

It also tells of the challenges that cerebral palsy put in her way, and how she managed these.

It is also a love story. In her memoir we meet her beloved David, and follow their romance, that at first seemed impossible, and then it became inevitable.

It is a story filled with love and work plus determination and humour.

And it contains some hair-raising jaunts including avoiding snakes in a wheelchair beside Lake Burley Griffin.

This beautiful book has a sensual portrait of Jenni on the cover.

The photograph was part of her final assessment at Art School.

The slight blurriness of the picture represents her movements, given Jenni lives with cerebral palsy.

Jenni wrote much of the memoir with eye-gaze control technology - eye movements are tracked by a camera which moves the mouse on the computer screen.

It has taken Jenni around 20 years to write, and it is definitely worth the wait for her readers.

The development of 'Through the Years' was assisted by an Australia Council Grant through Belconnen Arts Centre's IGNITE Creative program.

Come and meet the author as well as buy the book and celebrate with Jenni and David Heckendorf at Harry Hartog Bookshop, Australian National University.

'Through the Years' can also be purchased from the publisher, Ginninderra Press.

"This beautifully written memoir by Jenni Heckendorf reveals a woman with firm opinions, a warm sense of family and a keen sense of her own value.

"She has also lived with cerebral palsy her whole life.

"A must-read for anyone who has ever doubted the indomitability of the human spirit" wrote Professor Donna Lee Brien, Central Queensland University on the Ginninderra Press website.
