As travel becomes faster and more efficient, and more airlines fight to fly further and faster, perhaps the luxury can be found in not getting there faster, but slowing things right down. Hop on board a luxury rail adventure, and you will relax quickly, but escape slowly.
Heralded as some of the world's great rail adventures, The Ghan and the Indian Pacific are renowned for luxurious trips, journeying through some of Australia's most unforgettable spots. And this month, operator Journey Beyond Rail is adding a new route to its repertoire, and the first to visit Canberra.
Great Southern is a laidback journey through the country's south-east corner. With the inaugural season running December 6, 2019 - January 30, 2020, the three-day trip leaves from Adelaide and winds through the Grampians region, Canberra, Coffs Harbour, and finishes up in Brisbane, while stunning views of the country's east coast glide by.
The ultimate way to travel on Great Southern is Platinum Service. The all-inclusive package includes a luxury cabin, premium food and wine, off-train excursions, plus discreet, personalised service, meaning you'll barely lift a finger.
Designed with the discerning traveller in mind, the platinum suites include a full-size ensuite, and large windows offering views from both sides of the train. By day, the adaptable cabins are configured as a private lounge with comfortable seating and a table. At night, they're converted into a double or twin beds, complete with luxury linen sheets. You can take the time to enjoy a nightcap before bed.
Outside of the cabin, the Platinum Club carriage is also available exclusively for the use of platinum guests. Beautifully appointed with quartzite tabletops, timber flooring, brass fittings and leather banquette lounges, the carriage is available for relaxing, mingling with other platinum guests, or having a drink - no less than Bollinger of course - or having a casual meal.
Dining is also a gourmet experience, and the platinum service includes hearty breakfasts, two-course lunches and four-course dinners, matched with premium drinks. The dedicated on-board culinary team work closely with the region's farmers and providores to create a menu that reflects the regions you journey across.
