Paul Jones, who's part of a training trio with his mother Barbara Joseph and brother Matthew Jones, was at their stables near Tathra looking after their 14 horses there.
He was preparing them for the meeting scheduled for Thursday, but it's been abandoned due to the fires.
Monday's Moruya Cup meet has also been postponed.
Fellow Canberra trainer Matthew Dale and Queanbeyan trainer Joe Cleary also have stables down at Moruya.
While Jones has been at the coast, his brother Matt was looking after their main stables at Canberra's Thoroughbred Park.
Matthew's wife was down in Cobargo with her mother and they were evacuated to the beach.
"My brother Matthew and his wife's family are relatives of the two deceased unfortunately, so they're pretty shattered," Jones said.
"Amd Matt's wife was actually in Cobargo with her mother and they evacuated to the beach yesterday morning.
"I believe their house is OK, but obviously it's very sombre in Cobargo today."
Jones felt the horses and Sapphire Coast track were safe.
They were originally trapped there if the fire came their way, but the reopening of the highway near Brown Mountain means they currently have a way out.
Jones said while the race track was surrounded by bush there was a 150-metre clearing separating them.
But the smoke has been thick like in Canberra and horses were unable to train at either track on Wednesday.
"We weren't really threatened at Sapphire. There was a fire the other side of Bemboka," Jones said.
"The burnt leaves have landed as far as Merimbula and that's been happening the last two days.
"But we were never really under threat at our stables."
