The West Australian star on Sunday erased the pain of his heartbreaking defeat in 2019 by claiming the green-and-gold jersey in the elite men's road race.

Meyer was distraught last year when rival Michael Freiberg surged past him and Chris Harper to snatch victory in the dying stages.

But there were tears of a different kind this time for the 32-year-old, who was mobbed by teammates after the finish line.

His win completed a double for the powerful Mitchelton-Scott outfit at Buninyong, near Ballarat, after Amanda Spratt saluted in the earlier women's road race.

Teammate Luke Durbridge also won the time trial at a successful national championships for the World Tour team.

Meyer's brother Travis won the road race in 2010 and, while the older sibling had claimed national criterium and time-trial crowns - along with a host of track world championships - the road race was the title he desperately wanted.

"Emotion actually nearly took over me with 3km to go and I had to hold it together," Meyer said.

"It means so much to me and I've seen my brother win it.

"I fell in love with this race and, 12 years ago, I was fourth in my first elite title around here.

"It's just a surreal moment.

"This is the queen (supreme) jersey, it's the one that everyone comes here for, to try and conquer Mt Buninyong and take the road race jersey."

Meyer's teammate Lucas Hamilton was second and Marcus Culey (Sapura) third around the 185.6km circuit.

Meyer was part of an eight-man pack who entered the final 11.6km lap together.

He broke clear on the final climb after Hamilton had paved the way for victory with a strong attack on the second-last climb up Mt Buninyong.

"Cameron's been here 12 years and he's been on the podium, he's been fourth and he's delivered for a lot of other guys," Hamilton said.

"Last year, he got close to it but just didn't quite have the legs in the finale, so we're super happy for someone like Cameron to pull it off."

Mitchelton-Scott filled four of the top eight spots in the men's race, with Durbridge fourth and Michael Hepburn eighth.

Meanwhile, Ballarat and surrounds will remain the home of the Road Nats for at least the next three years, with a deal struck between Cycling Australia and the Victorian Government.
