Acting fundraiser
Canberra Times theatre critic and drama teacher Peter Wilkins is holding a one-day Acting For the Fun of It activity for bushfire relief. Suitable for ages 16+. 9am: Learn about DreamWorks Animation's films including Shrek, Trolls and How to Train Your Dragon. Explore concept drawings, storyboards, models, masks, maps, paintings and other original artworks from the studio's archive. Various ticket prices. National Museum of Australia. nma.gov.au.
The Little Mermaid
2pm: Ickle Pickle presents the Disney musical about a mermaid who gives up her voice to be able to go on land when she falls in love. Belconnen Theatre. icklepickle.com.au.

11am: Experience art making, storytelling, music and dance at Super Sunday, the National Gallery's free monthly program for the whole family (materials provided). Friday: At Bilk in Manuka at 6pm, Carlier Makigawa's exhibition will open. It combines work from her Delirious In Uzbekistan collection and pieces never exhibited in Australia before. This is the gallery's last show in Manuka.
New films
A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood (PG): Tom Hanks portrays beloved longtime US children's TV host Fred Rogers in this film based on a true story. A jaded magazine writer (Matthew Rhys) is given a life-changing assignment to profile Rogers.
Just Mercy (M): Civil rights defence attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) works to free Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx), an African-American death row inmate convicted of murdering a white woman. Based on a true story.
Like A Boss (M): Best friends Mia and Mel (Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne) are running their own cosmetics company but are in over their heads financially. Then a buyout offer comes - but it might destroy the friendship.
Underwater (M): A crew of six stationed on a damaged underwater research facility must walk across the ocean floor to a distant abandoned rig while pursued by deadly creatures.
