Canberra's Brigadier John Shanahan is one of 24 ACT Australian Defence Members to be recognised in the 2020 Australia Day Honours List .

Brigadier Shanahan has been awarded a bar to his Distinguished Service Cross in recognition of his service in Afghanistan from 2017 to 2019.
He was the chief of operations for NATO's Operation Resolute Support Headquarters and the commanding general for Train Advise Assist Command - South.
Another Canberran, Colonel Stephen Gliddon, was also recognised for service as part of Operation Resolute Support with a Commendation for Distinguished Service.
The awards received by ACT ADF members reflect the wide range of places where Australians are serving.
Rear Admiral Jaimie Hatcher, for example, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his participation in Operations Okra and Highroad in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Colonel Gavin Stanford, already the holder of a Conspicuous Service Cross, was awarded a Commendation for Distinguished Service in recognition of his efforts as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the multinational coalition against Daesh in Syria and Iraq.
Brigadier Wade Stothart DSC was also awarded a Commendation for Distinguished Service for his role in the same operation. Both men served in the middle east from late 2017 to late 2018.
A significant number of female service people were also honoured. Their numbers included Commander Bronwyn Ferrier CSM who was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross for outstanding achievement in the management of occupational hygiene and environmental hazards in the RAN.
Commander Jennifer Macklin, also of the ACT, was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross for her outstanding achievements in the promotion of diversity and inclusion in the navy.
The highest award to a non-commissioned ADF member in today's list was a Commendation for Distinguished Service to Corporal Lachlan Mitchell from NSW.
