John Morrison, who was a former army and police officer, died aged 84.
In a Facebook post on Thursday the Prime Minister said his father "lived a great life and was much loved".
"He was a loving husband to my mum Marion for 57 years," Mr Morrison wrote.
"He was a wonderful father to me and my brother Alan.
"He loved Jen as a daughter and was a devoted grandfather to our girls."
John Morrison also served as a councillor and mayor for Sydney's Waverley Council. He also worked as a youth worker and in aged care, Mr Morrison said.
Earlier on Thursday, Mr Morrison ended a press conference saying he had to attend to family matters.
Mr Morrison said his father was going through a difficult time when he paid tribute to him in Parliament last month.
"If I may take this moment of indulgence, as my father is watching from an aged-care facility near his home, I'd just like to wish him all the very best for his 84th birthday. Dad, we're all thinking of you at this very difficult time, and I wish I could be there with you," Mr Morrison said.
Labor leader Anthony Albanese said at the time: "I reckon some things are above politics and the Prime Minister's father's birthday is one of them, so I say 'happy birthday' from everyone on this side as well."
Former prime minister Julia Gillard offered Mr Morrison her condolences. Her father also died while she was in office.
"Losing your dad is always hard, and even more so when you are serving as PM. My thoughts are with him and his family," Ms Gillard said.
