Arnont Singsathitsuk, 20, appeared briefly in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday morning. He did not enter pleas.
Magistrate Beth Campbell said the arson charge alleged that Mr Singsathitsuk set fire to a home on Enderby Street, Mawson, on January 3.
Mr Singsathitsuk, who was not wearing shoes when he appeared in court, also faces two property damage charges relating to the Mawson address.
Ms Campbell said a psychiatrist had recommended Mr Singsathitsuk undergo a mental health assessment. She ordered that the 20-year-old be taken to Canberra Hospital.
The court will determine whether Mr Singsathitsuk should be granted bail when he returns.
