US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the surge in Australian bushfire donations from Americans and the willingness of US firefighters to fly in to help is testament to the strength of the bonds the nations share.
Mr Pompeo, in an Australia Day message, described Australia as an indispensable partner in securing a free and open Indo-Pacific and said the US-Australia alliance would continue to be a leading force for achieving peace and stability around the world.
"On behalf of the government of the United States of America, I would like to congratulate the Australian people on the occasion of Australia Day on January 26," Mr Pompeo said in a statement.
"The US-Australia relationship is an admirable example of how two countries can work together to bring peace, stability, and prosperity to our people and the world.
"The tragic loss of life and property from the devastating Australian wildfires saddens us deeply.
"The surge in donations from Americans concerned about their Australian friends and the warm reception American firefighters received across Australia demonstrate our dedication to support each other."
