Ms Drake's resignation comes about nine months out from the ACT election and a few months after the resignation of party secretary Matt Byrne.

Her tenure was due to end at the next party conference later this year but she announced her resignation earlier this month.

"I have not taken this decision lightly but I am conscious that I have not been able to give my presidential post the time or focus that it truly deserves," she said in an email to members.

"My decision is primarily due to the work commitments and because of my change in roles, I am finding it untenable to continue at this time."

Secretary Mel James said the process of finding Ms Drake's replacement would be decided at a branch council meeting in February.

She said the departure would not have an impact on the party's preparations for this year's election.

Ms James said Ms Drake had set the party up well and helped it grow its membership through her focus on women and culture.

She said the role of president would become more demanding in an election year.

"Part of the president's role includes being a spokesperson for the party," she said.

"In a public service town like Canberra that can be a real ask of someone in an election year."

Ms Drake said she was pleased the party been able to implement most of the recommendations from a review into bullying and harassment, which she pushed for.

"As many will know, I have always been committed to working together to build a stronger culture in our party that is inclusive and fair for everyone to be able to participate in the way they want to," she said.

She said she would have liked to have been able to establish a women's mentoring program and create better gender equity transparency within the party.

But she hoped that work would continue under the next president.

"Our party is, as always, an amazing vehicle for positive social change and I will always continue to be involved as a party member," Ms Drake said.

"I am confident that the new secretary Mel James will have the support from admin, the ACT Labor Parliamentary Party and the broader membership to keep moving forward and win this year's election with the gusto and the passion that we all expect.

"Thank you for your understanding and support over last 18 months."
