Facing the future with love, decency and kindness

Patience, kindness and plenty of cheek - these are the pillars of a strong foundation, according to LDK Seniors' Living residents Guy and Ginny.

It's advice well worth heeding as the couple celebrate 55 years together this year.

"I couldn't ask for a better partner than my wife Ginny," Guy enthuses.

"Someone asked us once what our secret was to a long and happy relationship.

"My beautiful wife Ginny said it best: patience and kindness.

"I mean, we still give each other plenty of cheek!"

Their mutual understanding and affection has been tested - and strengthened - over the decades as they navigated a growing family, work, retirement and, in recent years, a raft of health issues.

At 50, Guy suffered a heart attack and as he recovered, Ginny's health began to decline.

"Caring for each other has always given us peace of mind," Guy says of the loving bond the two share.

"One thing remains the same after all these years: our love and support for each other."

While their commitment to each other is unwavering, Guy and Ginny realised their respective care needs had progressed beyond what they could comfortably provide on their own.

Their children too, acknowledged their parents needed greater help and attention.

Daughter Jodie, the eldest of her siblings, admits she finds it difficult to see her once vital and healthy parents succumb to a raft of health issues.

She shouldered much of the responsibility of helping her parents choose a new home where their increasing care needs, particularly those of her mother, could be met.

It proved a complex process with much to investigate and take into consideration, especially Guy and Ginny's fervent desire to stay together despite requiring vastly different levels of care.

That's when LDK became the perfect fit.

"Mum and Dad have always lived in the same area, they went to church there and formed lifelong friendships with neighbours and friends who also lived close by," Jodie says.

LDK is committed to ensuring couples stay together in their own home throughout their ageing journeys, a priority that resonated strongly with Jodie and her family.

"The more I heard about LDK, the more I was certain this was the way forward and the way that aged care should be," Jodie says.

"LDK ticked all those boxes that were important to mum and dad, as well as to me and our family."

Setting LDK apart from other retirement and aged care providers is its industry-leading 'One Move Promise'.

When a resident moves into an LDK community, they will never need to move again, regardless of how their care needs escalate.

LDK residents can receive round-the-clock care from medical professionals in the comfort, security and familiarity of their own home.

"My background is in nursing and it's lifted a huge weight off my shoulders to see the beautiful relationships Mum has developed living at LDK and to know that care is here 24/7," Jodie says.

"It feels so good to know that mum absolutely loves it here.

"This is truly home and she'll never have to move again.

"This is how every senior Australian deserves to be treated."

Guy too is full of praise for the new home he shares with Ginny.

"LDK provides us with 24/7 care in the privacy and convenience of our own home," Guy says.

"We won't ever have to move - that's what I call peace of mind."

Driving LDK's vision and its pioneering, multi-tiered model that offers a genuine alternative to the traditional retirement living and aged care options is a commitment to treating senior Australians with love, decency and kindness.

LDK communities, including Greenway Views, its first purpose-built Seniors' Living village in Canberra, are designed to provide the vibrant lifestyle of a retirement village while offering all levels of care if a resident's needs progress, from low to high care, including dementia and palliative care.

LDK National Care Manager Joanne Ramadge has decades of experience in the nursing and care sectors across fields as diverse as oncology, education and palliative care and has discovered one issue remains constant.

"Children, from my experience working with families, really want what's best for their parents," Dr Ramadge asserts.

"What I've heard from families and children is that they are concerned about their parents moving into residential aged care.

"They're reluctant because they want their parents to live as normal a life as possible in their own home.

"When they come to LDK there is a sense of relief that they've found something that they truly believe will be better for their parents.

"Increasingly, children of ageing parents are taking on the responsibility of moving them into aged care and those who visit one of our Seniors' Living communities tell me that they can't believe they've been lucky enough to find somewhere like LDK that provides care and support and lives up to the values of love, decency and kindness."

Dr Ramadge says LDK's care process is a true partnership where residents work collaboratively with staff and medical providers to retain full control over their care and lifestyle options.
