Garraway is tactical and communicative, while Leonard leads by physicality. So the ACT Brumbies brought in the best from both worlds to fill the void left by veteran Shellie Milward.
The former skipper will miss the season due to a shoulder injury, opening the door for the rookie captains to step into a leadership role and develop their game further.
The duo will have their first test as Super W captains when the Brumbies open their season against Western Australia at Canberra Stadium on Saturday.
Garraway will steer the ship at scrum-half, while Leonard brings the brawn to the second-row.
"Jane is going to be the brain, so she's going to make a lot of on field decisions," Leonard said.
"Being nine, she's in a position where she can see what's going on and her game experience gives her knowledge to know what's going on and respond to that quickly.
"It'll be up to her to make those calls and lead in that aspect of the game. Hopefully I can go out there, play well, chat on the field and lead that way."

The co-captaincy continues Leonard's rapid rise through the ranks after making her Wallaroos debut just 18 months after being convinced to trial for the Brumbies squad.
The 24-year-old lock also brings experience from the Australian A squad to the role, having captained the side on their recent tour of Fiji.
Leonard is one of three capped Wallaroos players in the squad alongside, Brumbies recruit Rebecca Smyth and Lousie Burrows.
Garraway, 22, was surprised to earn captaincy given her age and experience, but says it's helpful to have established players to lean on.
"We're quite young as captains but I definitely believe we have older girls in the squad we can rely on," Garraway said.
"They have experience and naturally lead on and off the field as well. If we get into any trouble or need guidance, we know we have them to turn to, they're a great asset to our team."
The Brumbies made the finals for the first time last year, but were knocked out of title contention by Queensland. They've added 17 new faces to the squad this year in a bid to end the Queensland and NSW dominance on top of the ladder.
Garraway and Leonard are entering their third Super W season and have their sights set on bucking that trend.
"We come into every season wanting to do a step better and we've done that over the last two years, finishing fourth and then third," Leonard said.
"I think we want to take a step further this year and finish in the top two and hopefully on top if we can.
"Every game is going to be a challenge and I think we need to focus on each one as it comes. We can't get too far ahead of ourselves now because we don't want to fall short in the long run."
