One of Australia's largest payers of excise, Carlton and United Breweries (CUB) provided Customs officers and spouses free beer, lunches and tickets to concerts, the Melbourne Cup and the Adelaide Grand Prix in a little more than a year, The Canberra Times reported on this day in 1994.

Carlton provided 30 slabs of beer for the Customs Christmas party at Inland Revenue, Victoria, while Remy Australia provided a dozen bottles of wine and two bottles of spirits.
Tooheys gave three slabs of beer and other companies, including Schweppes, provided soft drinks, mixer drinks and wine.
Australian Airlines gave free membership of Flight Deck to a customs officer "as reward for being flight deck coordinator for Customs", while Ansett, which was host to Customs officers, provided one officer and his wife with dinner and overnight accommodation.
Other companies which entertained Customs officials during the year included Philip Morris, Rothmans, Unisys, Ford and BP.
There were many other gratuities provided during the year by other donors.
