The platinum-selling singer and songwriter warmed up for his concert in Canberra playing soccer with United's Laura Hughes, Hayley Taylor-Young, Sally James and Kayleigh Kurtz.
The quartet jammed along to his music on the way but as soon as he pulled on a Manchester United jersey, Hughes went from fan to rival.
The Liverpool supporter admits she might have taken the four-on-four friendly a little too seriously, but says it was worth it when United came away with the win.
"He was actually pretty good, I think he's played before," Hughes said.
"He was quite nifty with the ball, he and his friends tried really hard to beat us but we controlled it pretty well and came away with the win.
"He did put on a Manchester United jersey which I was pretty disappointed with. I'm a Liverpool supporter so there was a bit of rivalry there, I didn't want to lose to him."
Hughes will bring the same winning attitude to United's final match of the season against the Brisbane Roar at Lions FC Stadium on Sunday.

Canberra sit sixth on the ladder and have fallen short of finals for the third straight season, but there's still plenty to play for with future contracts in mind.
Players can only sign season-long contracts in the W-League and the departure of Heather Garriock could see an overhaul of United's roster under the impending coach.
"Every season there's a question mark on which players will come and who will stay, but especially now with a new coach coming in," Hughes said.
"They can change a lot with staff and the way they want to play. I haven't talked to many girls about it, but whoever comes in as coach I'm sure they'll do a good job, bring back quality players and do what's right for the club.
"Some girls are thinking about it, but you never know what can happen in a year."
Karly Roestbakken and Nikola Orgill are set to join European clubs at the end of their W-League campaign, while Aoife Colvill cut her season short to link up with Glasgow City earlier this week.
Roestbakken is believed to have signed with a Norwegian club, joining the European exodus of Matildas along with Sam Kerr (Chelsea), Caitlin Foord (Arsenal) and Hayley Raso (Everton).
Raso scored the deciding goal in United's 2-1 loss to Brisbane in round four, with Canberra looking to capitalise on her departure and claim their first back-to-back win of the season.
"We know that's our goal going into Brisbane, it's always going to be a tough game away," Garriock said.
"I just think if we can lock up the midfield, especially with the quality of Brisbane's midfield, then we'll have a chance.
"We've got a potent attack and I think that's the most important thing. We need to finish our chances, obviously Hughes scoring the first goal last week's game built momentum and confidence which is crucial."
