On Sunday, a Victorian man in his 50s became the youngest person to die in Australia to date.

Young people also recover faster, although it still takes people in their 20s a median time of 27 days to recover (measured from the time their symptoms started). People over 70 take a median time of 36 days to recover.

Coughing remains the most common symptom by far, with 70 per cent of confirmed cases reporting a cough, and just under half reporting a headache (49 per cent), a fever (47 per cent) or a sore throat (45 per cent).

For some people, the only symptom is a cough (202 of 2257 cases where symptoms are known). And while a runny nose is not one of the telltale coronavirus symptoms, in 50 cases it was the only symptom reported.

The data are contained in the government's weekly epidemiology report which analyses cases to Sunday March 29, and its more recent data sources on ages and sexes.

The split between men and women remains even, although there is no information on whether men are getting more severe cases of COVID-19 than women as appears to be happening overseas.

As of March 29, there had been 15 deaths, ranging in age from 67 to 94 - seven men and eight women. The longest time from symptom onset to death was 12 days. Three of those who died had other conditions - diabetes, chronic respiratory conditions and stroke. The number of deaths has more than doubled in the eight days since, to 39 on April 6.

People in their 20s account for 22 per cent of all cases, with more women than men testing positive in this age group (648 women, 528 men).

People over 70 account for 13 per cent of cases. In this age group, men outnumber women (398 men, 320 women).

The median age of people ending up in hospital was 58. Of those hospitalised, 6.2 per cent had diabetes and 6 per cent had heart disease. On March 29, five people had been put on ventilators.

As of 6am on March 29, Australia had 4159 cases - although information on symptoms was only available for 2257 of those cases. By Monday April 6, there were 5722 cases.
