The horses were to have been put down by their owner after an inspection by the NSW branch of the RSPCA.
Following negotiations with with the owner, the horses were taken over by the ACT branch of the RSPCA.
The ACT Branch's President, Mr Bob Akhurst said the horses were to receive food and have all the necessary veterinary attention.
The horses were to be placed with people, who, have offered their expertise and facilities to care for them.
Post publication of this report, the RSPCA switchboard had been flooded with calls for people offering to provide the horses with good homes, to donate money and to condemn the owner of the animals for neglecting them.
The RSPCA initiated negotiations with the owner and had purchased the horses for a nominal sum.
"We're very relieved that this story had a happy ending, but regrettably in the past a number of others haven't and the horses have had to be destroyed" Mr Akhurst said.
