On this day in 1972, The Canberra Times reported that early morning air pollution could be expected in the ACT for the upcoming months. A Department of the Interior spokesperson said that this was because in Canberra, on cold mornings, temperature inversion trapped the smog low over the city area until the day warmed up. The spokesperson commented on reports of recent heavy smog in the Fyshwick-Kingston area. ACT Health Services, which has a device for measuring the density of air pollution, had not been called upon to check the smog. Nor had the department received from the public any complaints about the dense smoke cloud, the spokesperson said. The public was also being asked about auctions. The ACT Advisory Council invited submissions from the public on the restricted lease auction system. The submissions were invited on the basis that the people making them appear before a committee of the council if they wished. The first blocks for private development at Macgregor were offered at the lease auctions. Plans for the suburb provided for 1257 building blocks, of which 408 were for government housing.
