But coach Dan McKellar says will not ban players from social media or warn them about social distancing restrictions despite NRL players breaching protocols this week.

McKellar remains "optimistic but realistic" about plans for a new Super Rugby format in the coming months, backing moves to have Pacific Island or Asian involvement in any domestic competition. Australian players will meet with their New Zealand counterparts next week to discuss their vision for playing again, with the potential of border restrictions being lifted later in the year.

The Brumbies could apply to return to training next week given the Canberra Raiders are expected to be given the all clear to do the same at their $19 million Braddon headquarters. Players will have to adhere to strict biosecurity measures.

Brumbies players have been put on active rest until May 11 to give them a chance to refresh physically and mentally after playing six Super Rugby games and spending six weeks in isolation training.

"I spoke to the players last Friday and this two weeks was just about giving them some space," McKellar said.

"...We trust our players to do the right thing, we always talk about the fact we represent the Brumbies 24/7 and it's part of our values. So we trust they'll do the right thing.

"I've been watching it closely, mainly just as a fan because I think everyone is craving sport. They're leading the way for sport in general ... they're the guinea pigs for the sport in general and all codes around steps that need to be taken to make it possible.

"I think you've got to let the experts in their field deal with what they need to. I think you've got to admire [the NRL's] ambition."
