The 24-year-old's new-look blonde hair is a product of two attempts to try something new - both of which failed, much like plenty of other isolation-induced haircuts across the NRL.

While a foray into hairdressing went awry, Nicoll-Klokstad has used the rest of his downtime to study rugby league's premier fullbacks in a bid to add more strings to his bow ahead of the NRL's return.

James Tedesco and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck set the benchmark for fullbacks in the NRL - both have a Dally M medal and a wardrobe full of representative jerseys to their name.

But a third fullback has emerged as one Nicoll-Klokstad could learn from perhaps more than most in Parramatta Eels custodian Clint Gutherson.

Now the Raiders star is determined to follow in Gutherson's footsteps to become the ultimate support player and add another dimension to Canberra's attack.

"For me it's just about building on the platform I laid last year, that's not going away from the stuff I do best," Nicoll-Klokstad said.

"It's just adding little things to my game, I don't want to change my game dramatically, it's just about improving one per centers.

"Something I've done a lot more already this year is a lot more video, is watching a lot more video. Watching Tedesco, Roger, Clint Gutherson.

"Man, they're always on the ball, especially Clint Gutherson. I really admire how he plays as a fullback.

"I guess he doesn't really get the accolades James Tedesco would. But whenever you see a break, he is always around the footy.

"I just try to take cues from what I think he is looking for and try to add that into my game as well.

"All fullbacks have to be fit these days, the game demands a lot from them. I'm making sure I'm sticking on my diet, I'll stay away from the chocolates and put it out here at training."

The Raiders are back on deck at their Braddon base with an eye on their round three clash with the Melbourne Storm on May 30.

Beyond that is a clash with the unbeaten Newcastle Knights at Campbelltown Stadium - the Green Machine's home away from home for the next seven rounds.

But the prospect of returning to action is yet to sink in for Nicoll-Klokstad following what has already been a two-month layoff.

"It doesn't feel real at all," Nicoll-Klokstad said.

"I was just saying the other day to the physio, it's probably going to take all the way up to us running out onto the field for it to feel real, and get that first hit-up.

"For us it's about trying to mimic those routines and making sure we're trying to prepare as best as possible.

"We've had a couple of Saturday sessions already, this will be our third one this weekend and we're just trying to make those days as close to game-related as possible."
