Police were attacked and a man gaoled during a Garema disturbance this day 53 years ago. A labourer, of Fraser Place, Yarralumla, was before the court on charges arising out of a disturbance in Garema Place which resulted in more than 20 police officers being called to the scene.

He was sent to prison for two months when convicted for resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. A 19-year-old female of Causeway, a 21-year-male fitter, of O'Connor and a 21-year-old male labourer of Lyneham, also appeared in court on charges arising from the disturbance.
Mr Dobson, SM, said that unless something drastic was done, the position in Canberra would get completely out of hand.
The whole proceedings in Garema Place were typical of the dingo packs of hoodlums quite common around Canberra. An individual youth alone would display cowardness, but when in groups of 10 or more, they become very courageous.
After receiving a complaint, Constable A.J. Dau reported that he attended a snack bar in Garema Place, late, one Saturday evening, to find a number of youths standing in groups. Constable Dau had been struck a hard blow across the left eye. His assistant, Constable Young, was also being harrassed.
The member for Canberra, Mr Haslem (Lib) told the meeting that he was "absolutely mystified" as to what was going on in the ACT.
