Glenn Sage, of Cook, was driving home with his wife when he witnessed an accident between a Toyota utility and a Ford Falcon sedan at the intersection of Belconnen Way and Bindubi Street.
The Toyota had collided with the rear of the Ford, causing the petrol tank to burst. Petrol was sprayed over both cars and ignited.
Sage said he arrived on the scene about 30 seconds after the collision, and both cars, plus the surrounding areas, were still alight. In a incredibly brave act, Sage tried to open the door of the Toyota but it was too hot.
He then noticed several children and adults were trapped in the Ford, and so he ran to their aid.
Amazingly, he was able to help a woman out of the passenger window and he then removed two small children from the back seat by smashing the window with a fire extinguisher from his vehicle.
With the assistance of another motorist, Robert Cocks, Sage was also able to remove a man and another child and they were all then taken to hospital by Cocks.
Sage then helped the unconscious driver of the Toyota.
Six of the people rescued were taken to Canberra Hospital and treated for burns and lacerations.
