The president of the Master Hairdressers Association, Mr Bruce Swan, denied that there was any move among association members to have prices raised, but said that a meeting to discuss rising costs would be called.
Canberra hairdressers were understood to want the average price of haircuts raised from 90 cents to one dollar.
One Canberra hairdresser, Mr F. Calabria was opposed to the idea. He says he will not raise the charge for adults and would lower his prices for children. Mr Calabria said the fashion of long hair for men had reduced business.
The solution was to encourage housewives to take their children to salons and only charge what was affordable. Men's and boy's haircuts rose 10 cents to 90 cents the previous year.
A move later from the Association resulted in prices remain as fixed. Today, prices for haircuts start around $39, for a basic trim up to and in excess of $200 depending on length and style.
