Leslie William Windser, 71, on Tuesday told the Queanbeyan Local Court he would plead not guilty to charges of intentionally causing a fire and being reckless as to its spread, and causing or setting fire to the property of another.
NSW Police charged the Bungendore man in March after an "extensive" investigation that began on December 16 last year.
Officers were called to a property on the Kings Highway near Bungendore that day, following reports of a fire.
The blaze affected a number of rural properties, threatening homes and burning through about 62 hectares of land before it was brought under control.
A significant number of firefighters and resources were diverted from the nearby North Black Range fire to tackle this blaze, which resulted in the Kings Highway being closed to traffic for several hours.
In the days following the December 16 fire, Paul Jones from the NSW Rural Fire Service told The Canberra Times the blaze had come "very close" to four rural homes and that saving them had been "a close-run thing".
Mr Windser represented himself in court when he said he would plead not guilty to the charges on Tuesday.
Magistrate Roger Clisdell adjourned the case until July 27, and ordered police to serve their brief of evidence on Mr Windser ahead of that date.
