The federal parliament's electoral matters committee is taking public comment on the private bill proposed by Labor senators Malarndirri McCarthy and Don Farrell.

The bill would change electoral laws to provide for a minimum of two seats for the NT in the House of Representatives.

Projections show the NT is likely to lose a seat in a redistribution ahead of the next election, caused by its population falling below the entitlement quota for the second seat.

Submissions close on July 10.

The push has the support of many coalition members, as well as Labor.

But the government has said it is premature to speculate about the outcome of the electoral redistribution.

The Australian Electoral Commission will not start the process before July 3.

The redistribution is required to keep seats of roughly equal enrolment size within a state or territory.

Based on this, Victoria is expected to gain a seat while WA would join the NT in losing one, with the number of lower house seats reduced in total from 151 to 150.

Labor holds both NT lower house seats.
