The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for alpine areas above 1900m for damaging winds up to 120km/h forecast throughout Thursday.
The wild weather could impact Thredbo, Charlotte Pass, Perisher Valley, and Mount Ginini.
Canberra also experienced a morning of wild weather as a cold front brought a storm across the city before 7am.
1.6mm was recorded at the airport.
Despite the wet and windy weather it was a relatively warm start for Canberrans, at 10 degrees by 7am.
A vigorous cold front is crossing southeastern NSW bringing strong and gusty northwesterly winds.
For alpine areas between 1600-1900m winds are expected to reach 90km/h.
Winds are expected to reach their peak during Thursday morning, before easing later Thursday afternoon or early evening as the front passes.
Thredbo Top Station AWS recorded a peak gust of 122 km/h about 12.30am.
