Not only has Josh Hodgson's injury been confirmed as a torn anterior cruciate ligament, but Bailey Simonsson's season could be over as well.
Simonsson will meet with a surgeon this week and faces a three-to-four-month recovery after partially dislocating his shoulder.
It means the Raiders now only have 19 fit players with NRL experience, with John Bateman, Corey Horsburgh, Sia Soliola and Emre Guler already on the sidelines.
Siliva Havili will have to fill Hodgson's hooker boots, while New Zealand international Jordan Rapana will come onto the wing.
Curtis Scott should also earn a reprieve, coming back onto the bench for the grand final rematch against the Sydney Roosters at the SCG on Thursday night.
He was dropped for the Storm game after struggling in recent weeks.
Hodgson twisted his knee awkwardly in Canberra's 20-14 loss to the Melbourne Storm on Saturday night.
It's his right knee, the opposite to the one he injured playing for England in 2017.
MORE RAIDERS NEWS
"It's a very trying time so we've just got to make sure we are looking after each other and just got to stick tough. It's very a very difficult period," Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said.
He was already on the hunt for middle forwards, but that's become even more urgent.
"We're desperate in finding the right people to come in and assist a squad of players that are going to keep on doing everything they possibly can to keep winning games," Stuart said.
It means Havili will have to once again have to step up to the plate, having joined the Green Machine in 2018 to cover Hodgson's absence the first time.
But it's a position Havili will need to reacquaint himself with, given Hodgson has become an 80-minute hooker.
The 27-year-old played there for the first time this year after Hodgson was injured and has been mainly used coming off the bench at lock.
"It's big, he's a big part of our team and a big-name player. He's our skipper and it's big shoes to fill," Havili said.
"It's my primary position and I came here as a hooker.
"I'm no Josh Hodgson. I'm going to be myself and play to my strengths and do what I can do best.
"It's exciting, I like that position and hopefully I can do the team proud."
It also means Tom Starling will get his chance as Havili's back-up.
He's played just four NRL games, with three of those with the Raiders last season after moving from Newcastle.
The 22-year-old is one of the smallest players in the competition, but he's got plenty of ticker.
"Tommy's good, he's a little fella and full of heart. He's a funny character and good for us as a team," Havili said.
"We'll see what will happen with Hodgo and [Raiders coach Ricky Stuart] can make a call with the team."
