Premier Peter Gutwein said the suspected case had been identified in a government-run quarantine hotel.
He said there were 600 people held in quarantine in hotels across the state and 1000 people quarantined in their homes.
Mr Gutwein said more details would be provided by Public Health later today.
He released the first report of the Premier's Economic and Social Recovery Council on Monday.
The report contains 64 recommendations to restore demand and jobs and address economic and social structural issues.
Key recommendations include presenting to the Tasmanian community a future COVID-19 management strategy, more support for small to medium-sized businesses to access private sector finance and business advice, and careful management around the state's construction blitz.
The council has recommended modification of contracts with community service providers to extend funding certainty and acceleration of the state public service review.
