1. New music
Canberra singer Lisa Richards releases Dominoes, an original preview single of her upcoming album I got a Story, at Smith's Alternative this weekend. Richards will also give a sneak peek of the album, which will be released in November. I got a Story was recorded in New York in October 2019 with the support of ArtsACT. Richards says: "Spending many years of my adult life in both Austin, Texas and New York City shaped the songs I write and my musical development as an artist." Saturday, 6pm and 9pm. Smith's Alternative. Tickets are $25 for one show or $40 for both, from smithsalternative.com.
2. Just opened
PhotoAccess has three new exhibitions to check out this weekend. Aberration by Jacinta Giles is an exhibition that aims to interrogate the aesthetics of the television narrative around COVID-19 as a way to reflect upon the uncertainty of the present. Split by Chris Bowes is an exhibition set in the not too distant future that sees a cowboy walking the empty streets left by a society pushed over the edge. Ghost Light by Victoria Wareham focuses on the concept that screens are like ghosts - they are transparent, ephemeral, and surround us passively and unknowingly. PhotoAccess is open Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am-4pm.
3. Live from your lounge
Canberra bands East Row Rabble and Formerly Known As are coming together for an online performance for Live in Ya Lounge. Formerly Known As is comprised of five musicians who have come together for a one-off gig. East Row Rabble delivers a slick mix of funk, reggae, blues and soul with upbeat party horn lines that will get you dancing. Friday, at 7.30pm. Tickets are $27.46 from Eventbrite.
4. Online
Think you know your Harry Potter? Prove it. Harry Potter, the character, is turning 40 on Friday and Quizzic Alley is celebrating with a wizards' quiz. It's online, fun and free. The shop's 11-week series of online quizzes during March, April and June were popular, but it wasn't the end. The team will use Facebook Live and YouTube once again from 6pm for the quiz for kids and magical apprentices, followed by the master quiz at 7.30pm.
5. On show
Beaver Galleries has two new exhibitions available to see this weekend. Voyagers' Tales: Baudin by Nicola Dickson is inspired by part of the collection of Australian plants and animals acquired by Napoleon's wife, Empress Josephine, for her country residence in France, the Chateau Malmaison. A walk in the gardens by Sophia Szilagyi explores the relationship between fiction and non-fiction, challenging our perceptions of reality and the emotional response on memory. Beaver Galleries is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
